Gender Inequalities in the Furlough Scheme

As Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities Charlotte spoke in Parliament about the inequalities facing women in the furlough scheme.

Research from the TUC has found that 90% of working mums said that their stress levels had increased during lockdown; with 71% who asked being denied furloughs; and 48% treated negatively at work because of children.

Charlotte said:

"Women are already at greater risk of redundancy and work in sectors worst hit by lockdowns. This is fundamentally unfair.

It's time for the Government to step up and create a legal and enforceable right to paid flexible furlough to get families through the pandemic without women, in particular, being forced out of work by additional childcare responsibilities.

An approach of simply hoping employers will do the right thing is not good enough."
