Owners who own their home as leaseholders are currently unprotected and are being stung by the terms of their lease.
Currently these leaseholders are unprotected from rip-off ground rent rises, unfair charges to carry out home alterations and staggering rises in the cost to purchase their freeholds. This is completely unacceptable, which is why, along with my Labour colleagues, I am campaigning for an end to this deeply unfair practice. And why I have joined the All Party Parliamentary Group on Leasehold Reform.
The Law Commission published its report on this issue on 9th January 2020 after a two-year wait. Disappointingly, the report focuses heavily on the human rights of freeholders and not the human rights that leaseholders have over their homes. Labour has urged the Government to conduct an inquiry into leasehold mis-selling, and to take the steps needed to end leasehold for good. To date the Government has not commented on that proposal.
