The impact of COVID-19 on People with Learning Disabilities

As Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities Charlotte spoke in the Westminster Hall debate on the effect of the COVID-19 outbreak on people with learning disabilities.

The mantra that 'we are all in it together,’ simply isn’t true for people with learning disabilities. In her speech Charlotte raised issues ranging from ambulance guidance barring those over 16 from being accompanied to hospital, to provision for Christmas, this Government has consistently forgotten about its duties to people with learning disabilities.

Charlotte said:

"It’s crucial that these issues are rectified immediately and that future policy is made with people with learning disabilities at the forefront. Like local councils, the Government must undertake equality impact assessments and have meaningful consultation with organisations such as Mencap on any changes so that these scandals do not repeat themselves."
