Charlotte Speaks Out Against Job Losses in the Arts

Charlotte has spoken out against Chancellor Rishi Sunak's comments that musicians and those working in the arts should find 'new opportunities.'

Sunak told ITV News that "I can't pretend that everyone can do exactly the same job that they were doing at the beginning of this crisis. That's why we've put a lot of resource into trying to create new opportunities."

Charlotte said:

"This is callous and short-sighted in equal measure. The Government seems to view the arts as a 'nice to have' rather than a sector that contributes over £2.8billion a year to the Treasury via taxation, generates a further £23billion a year, supports 363,700 jobs and gives all our lives some colour. There's also the question, given the redundancies we're seeing across the economy where exactly all these jobs people employed in this sector are expected to move into are...

I will keep pushing the Government for focused support for the sectors which will be among the last to return to normal, but were not only viable were it not for restrictions imposed by the Government but thriving. Its more important than ever as we are trying to strike trade deals around the world that our world-renowned cultural exports are supported if we are going to be a truly 'global Britain'!"
